Intermodal Transport
Italy ⇄ Finland
Intermodal transport between Northern Italy and Finland: road only at both ends, rail to Lübeck and short-sea shipping across the Baltic Sea — for standard trailer loads and for cargo that needs a special solution.

one contract
Freight between Italy and Finland crosses the whole of Europe and the Baltic Sea. Instead of a truck driving the whole way, EFFIMODAL combines road at both ends with rail and short-sea shipping for the long-distance legs, coordinated as one chain. You deal with one contact, one contract and one invoice.
How the Route Works
- Road collection in Italy. A truck picks up the loaded trailer at your site and takes it to the intermodal network.
- Rail to Lübeck. The long-distance leg across Europe runs by rail to Lübeck, our hub in Northern Germany.
- Short-sea to Finland. The Baltic Sea leg takes the cargo from Lübeck to Finland.
- Road delivery in Finland. After arrival, a truck delivers the cargo to the consignee.
Transit time and schedule depend on the lane — your exact collection and delivery points, train slots and vessel departures. Ask for your schedule and we will plan the chain for your shipment.
Project cargo: a recent Italy–Finland flow
For a recent flow from Italy to Finland, the cargo needed more than a conventional trailer movement. Our trailers collected it in Italy and travelled by rail to Lübeck Skandinavienkai. There, together with Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft, the cargo was transloaded onto Mafi/cassette equipment and continued as unaccompanied project cargo on the Lübeck–Turku sea leg with our partner WALLENIUS SOL, followed by final-mile distribution in Finland. Read the case.
Why Intermodal on This Corridor
- Lower CO₂. Moving the long-distance legs to rail and sea takes trucks off the road for most of the journey and cuts CO₂ per tonne of cargo. We calculate the estimate for your lane with EcoTransIT World (ISO 14083 / GLEC methodology) and include it with your quote; for our calculated lanes see the CO₂ calculator. How we calculate: green transport in Europe.
- No weekend driving bans on the main leg. Rail and sea legs are not affected by weekend, night or holiday driving bans, by congestion on major corridors or by driver availability and rest time rules.
- One coordinated chain. Road, rail, terminal handling, short-sea shipping and final mile are planned as one chain, so every handover fits the next one.
- Solutions for difficult flows. When a flow does not fit a standard trailer movement, we combine infrastructure, equipment and partners to make it work.
Regions and Cities We Serve
- Italy: Verona and Segrate (Milan area), with collection and delivery by road in the surrounding regions.
- Finland: Helsinki and Vaasa; Turku on our Italy–Finland project flow.
- Hub: Lübeck, Northern Germany.
All locations and the regional contacts are on our network map.
Cargo and Equipment
Heavy, dense goods benefit most from the extra payload per trailer:
- Metals — steel coils, profiles, tubes
- Timber and wood-based panels
- Paper rolls and packaging materials
- Cement and construction materials
- Machinery and industrial equipment
- Beverages and bottled goods
We run our own cranable curtain-sided trailers: 13.6 m long, up to 28 t payload, with 2.65 m side access for forklift loading from both sides. Cargo securing is included — straps, edge protectors, anti-slip mats, distancing boards and pillows. In combined transport the gross weight can be 44 t instead of 40 t by road. For cargo that does not fit a trailer, Mafi/cassette equipment can be used on the sea leg.

FAQ: Italy ⇄ Finland
How does intermodal transport between Italy and Finland work?
Road collection in Italy, the long-distance leg by rail to Lübeck and by short-sea shipping across the Baltic Sea, then road delivery in Finland. One contact and one contract cover the whole chain.
Which places in Finland do you serve?
Helsinki and Vaasa are part of our network; on our Italy–Finland project flow the sea leg arrives in Turku. Send us your exact delivery point in Finland and we plan the chain for your shipment.
Can you move cargo that does not fit a standard trailer?
Yes. For a project flow from Italy to Finland we transload the cargo in Lübeck, together with Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft, from our trailers onto Mafi/cassette equipment, so it continues as unaccompanied project cargo on the sea leg to Turku with WALLENIUS SOL.
How much CO₂ does it save compared with road?
Moving the long-distance legs to rail and sea cuts CO₂ per tonne of cargo; how much depends on the chain. We calculate it for your lane with EcoTransIT World (ISO 14083 / GLEC methodology) and include the estimate with your quote.
What is the transit time between Italy and Finland?
Transit time and schedule depend on the lane — the exact collection and delivery points, train slots and vessel departures. Send us your route and we will come back with the schedule for your shipment.
