Who Moves Trailers by Intermodal to Italy?
EFFIMODAL is a combined transport operator registered in Riga, with its intermodal hub in Lübeck, Northern Germany. Combined transport is our core product: we plan each chain to Italy — truck to the terminal, the intermodal main leg, truck to the consignee — and run it with rail and ferry operators in our own cranable curtain-sided trailers.
Where Shipments to Italy Come From
- Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia): a regular combined transport service via Lübeck — intermodal transport Baltics to Italy.
- Northern Germany (Lübeck, Rostock, Duisburg): road and rail via our Lübeck hub — Italy–Germany intermodal transport.
- Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Jönköping, Trelleborg, Umeå): road, rail and ferry — Italy–Sweden intermodal transport.
- Norway (Oslo): road at both ends, rail and sea in between — intermodal transport Italy–Norway.
- Denmark (Aarhus): road at both ends, an intermodal main leg — intermodal transport Italy–Denmark.
How Intermodal Transport to Italy Works
- Road collection. A truck collects the loaded trailer at the shipper's site and takes it to the intermodal terminal.
- Intermodal main leg. The trailer is lifted by crane and travels the long-distance leg by rail and, where the route uses one, by ferry. The cargo itself is never touched or re-secured.
- Road delivery in Italy. At the destination terminal a truck collects the trailer and delivers it to the consignee in Northern Italy.
On the Baltic corridor, for example, the trailer crosses by ferry from Liepāja to Travemünde and continues by rail from Lübeck to Verona. Our planners coordinate collection, terminal, departure and delivery; transit time and schedule depend on your exact collection and delivery points.
Where We Deliver in Italy
- Verona and Segrate (Milan area), with collection and delivery by road in the surrounding regions — see the network map.
Trailers and Cargo
We run our own cranable curtain-sided trailers: 13.6 m long, up to 28 t payload, with 2.65 m side access for forklift loading from both sides. Cargo securing is included. Under the EU Combined Transport Directive the gross weight can be 44 t instead of 40 t by road. Dense cargo benefits most: steel, timber, paper rolls, construction materials, machinery and beverages.
