CO₂ Calculator
Intermodal vs Road
Choose a lane and the number of trailers to compare all-road transport with our intermodal chain: tonnes of CO₂e for both and the saving.
Indicative values per 24 t trailer. Intermodal includes an assumed 150 km first/last-mile road haulage. Source: EcoTransIT World (ISO 14083 / GLEC), run October 2026.
Why intermodal cuts CO₂ and what it means for your Scope 3 reporting: green transport in Europe.
Methodology
- Calculation tool. EcoTransIT World online emission calculator, default parameters, run October 2026.
- Standard. ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework.
- Basis. Well-to-wheel (WTW) CO₂e: the energy used to move the cargo plus the production and supply of the fuel and electricity.
- Cargo weight. 24 t of cargo per trailer, the same in both scenarios.
- Routing. All-road: the road route between origin and destination. Intermodal: the whole chain — road, rail and sea legs as shown with each result.
- First and last mile. The intermodal figures include an assumed 150 km of road haulage (75 km at each end). On Riga ⇄ Verona the Riga–Liepāja road leg is already part of the chain, so 75 km are added on the Verona side only.
- Scaling. Results scale linearly with the number of trailers.
- Status. Indicative values, not shipment-specific reports. Shipment-specific reports for your route, cargo and volumes are available on request.
- Other figures on this site. The per-tonne lane estimates on our green transport page come from a separate calculation with different assumptions, documented there, so their percentages differ from these.
- Date of data: EcoTransIT World online emission calculator, run 2026-10-17; 24 t cargo, WTW CO2e; intermodal incl. 150 km assumed drayage
FAQ: CO₂ Calculator
How much CO₂ does intermodal save on your lanes?
Per 24 t trailer, well-to-wheel, intermodal against all-road: 79% on Verona ⇄ Stockholm (Årsta) (4.1 vs 0.9 t CO₂e); 79% on Verona ⇄ Eskilstuna (Central Sweden) (4.1 vs 0.9 t CO₂e); 74% on Verona ⇄ Malmö (Southern Sweden) (3.1 vs 0.8 t CO₂e); 72% on Verona ⇄ Lübeck (Northern Germany) (2.5 vs 0.7 t CO₂e); 68% on Riga ⇄ Verona (Baltics – Italy) (4.1 vs 1.3 t CO₂e). Calculated with EcoTransIT World in October 2026; the intermodal figures include an assumed first- and last-mile road haulage.
How does the CO₂ calculator work?
Choose a lane and the number of trailers. The calculator multiplies the CO₂e per trailer for the all-road route and for the intermodal chain by the number of trailers, and shows both totals and the saving in tonnes and percent.
Which standard are the figures based on?
The figures come from the EcoTransIT World online emission calculator with default parameters, following ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework, on a well-to-wheel basis.
Can I use the results for Scope 3 reporting?
The results are indicative lane values. For your reporting we calculate shipment-specific figures for your actual route, cargo and volumes on request.
My route is not listed — can you calculate it?
Yes. Send us your collection and delivery points, cargo and volumes, and we calculate the CO₂ for your lane — all-road against intermodal — with your quote.
