Combined Transport

Freight between Italy and Denmark covers a long distance, which is exactly where intermodal transport pays off. Instead of a truck driving the whole way, EFFIMODAL collects your loaded trailer by road, moves it on the long main leg by intermodal transport, and delivers it by road at the other end. You deal with one contact, one contract and one invoice for the whole chain.

How the Route Works

  1. Road collection. A truck picks up the loaded trailer at your site in Italy or Denmark and takes it to the intermodal terminal.
  2. Intermodal main leg. The trailer is lifted by crane and travels the long-distance leg by rail, with a sea leg where the route uses one. The cargo itself is never touched or re-secured.
  3. Road delivery. At the destination terminal a truck collects the trailer and delivers it to the consignee.

Our hub in Lübeck, Northern Germany, is connected to Verona by rail — see our Italy ⇄ Germany lane. Transit time and schedule depend on your exact collection and delivery points. Ask for your schedule and we will plan the chain for your shipment.

Cargo and Equipment

Heavy, dense goods benefit most from the extra payload per trailer:

We run our own cranable curtain-sided trailers: 13.6 m long, up to 28 t payload, with 2.65 m side access for forklift loading from both sides. Cargo securing is included — straps, edge protectors, anti-slip mats, distancing boards and pillows. In combined transport the gross weight can be 44 t instead of 40 t by road.

FAQ: Italy ⇄ Denmark

How does combined transport between Italy and Denmark work?

A truck collects the loaded trailer from your site, the long-distance main leg runs by rail — with a sea leg where the route uses one — and another truck delivers it to the consignee. The cargo stays in the same cranable trailer from loading to delivery.

Which places in Denmark do you serve?

Aarhus is part of our network, with ferry connections to the Baltic States and Germany. Our hub in Lübeck, Northern Germany, is connected to Verona by rail. Send us your exact delivery point in Denmark and we plan the chain for your shipment.

How much CO₂ does it save compared with road?

Moving the long main leg from road to rail cuts CO₂ per tonne of cargo; how much depends on the chain. We calculate it for your lane with EcoTransIT World (ISO 14083 / GLEC methodology) and include the estimate with your quote.

How much can one trailer carry?

Up to 28 t of cargo per cranable curtain-sided trailer. In combined transport the gross weight can be 44 t instead of the usual 40 t by road.

What is the transit time between Italy and Denmark?

Transit time and schedule depend on the lane — the exact collection and delivery points. Send us your route and we will come back with the schedule for your shipment.
