Who Moves Trailers by Intermodal to the Baltic States?

EFFIMODAL is a combined transport operator registered in Riga, Latvia (SIA “EFFIMODAL”, Buļļu iela 45A, Rīga), with its intermodal hub in Lübeck, Northern Germany. The Baltic States are home ground for us: our regular combined transport corridor connects Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia with Northern Italy, and our team includes a planner for the Baltic States. We plan the chain — truck to the terminal, the ferry and rail main leg, truck to the consignee — and run it with rail and ferry operators in our own cranable curtain-sided trailers.

Where Shipments to the Baltic States Come From

Our network map also shows the Baltic ports connected with Germany and Scandinavia: Liepāja with Germany and Sweden, Klaipėda with Germany and Scandinavia, and Paldiski with Germany, Finland and Sweden. If your shipment starts somewhere else, send us the collection point and we plan the chain for your shipment.

How Intermodal Transport to the Baltic States Works

  1. Road collection. A truck collects the loaded trailer at the shipper's site — for example in Northern Italy — and takes it to the intermodal terminal.
  2. Rail and ferry main leg. The trailer travels by rail between Verona and Lübeck and crosses the Baltic Sea by RoRo ferry between Travemünde and Liepāja. It is lifted by crane at the terminals; the cargo itself is never touched or re-secured.
  3. Road delivery in the Baltic States. A truck delivers the trailer to the consignee in Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia.

Rail and sea are not subject to weekend driving bans, and fixed rail and ferry schedules make transit times predictable. Your schedule depends on the exact collection and delivery points — we confirm it with the quote.

Trailers and Cargo

We use purpose-built cranable curtain-sided trailers: 13.6 m long, up to 28 t payload, with full side access for forklift loading and all cargo securing equipment included. Under the EU Combined Transport Directive the maximum weight is 44 t — 4 tonnes more than by road. High-density goods benefit most: steel and metal products, timber and wood-based panels, paper rolls, machinery, construction materials and beverages.

CO₂ on the Baltic Corridor

On this corridor the ferry leg across the Baltic Sea reduces the gain to 17%, compared with our all-rail lanes to Germany and Sweden. Assumptions and sources: methodology. Per trailer and for your own volumes: CO₂ calculator: intermodal vs road.
