What Is Intermodal Transport?

Intermodal transport — also called combined transport or multimodal transport — uses two or more transport modes (road, rail, sea) for a single shipment. The cargo stays in the same trailer or container throughout, transferred between modes by crane or reach stacker at intermodal terminals.

In practice: a truck collects the cargo (first mile), the trailer is loaded onto a train or RoRo ferry for the long-haul leg, then another truck delivers at the destination (last mile).

The EU Combined Transport Directive

The EU Combined Transport Directive grants a key advantage: shipments using at least one non-road leg (rail or sea) are allowed a maximum weight of 44 tonnes — 4 tonnes more than standard road transport.
